Linolium Blocks

Desert Horse

"Desert Horse" 1994
This linoleum cut illustration was inspired from a dream I had about a quiet, content horse. I like the mood of this horse who is completely in harmony with his surroundings. He is part of the earth and the sky.

Fall Wind

"Fall Wind", 1994
Linolium block.

Winter Morn

"Winter Morn", 1994

Sumi Paintings

Grazing

"Grazing", 1997
Sumi Painting study of horses in their natural setting.

Sky Horse

"Sky Horse", 2005
This image was inspired by the need for people to re-open their senses, to think from a panoramic perspective, to let go of judgment.

Reflection "Reflection", 1990

Dignity "Dignity"

Freedom "Freedom"

"Coming Home", 1998
My intention with this painting was to paint an entire painting in red. Why? I'm not sure, but red represents to me the earth, the blood or lifeforce, the womb of hope. It is deep and primal. What is particularly interesting about this painting is that it is an exact image of my current home which I had not found or seen when I painted it. It was not until 1999 that I found the place of my belonging, the place at which I land, the place I had always dreamed of as a child. I have had this painting hanging in my home and office for many years and it was not until early 2005 that I realized that I had painted a vision of my future.

Down Under

"Down Under" 2006
These spirit horses came out all by themselves. They are down in the spirit world, inside of the earth itself. Over the last several years, I have felt that when we are present, open and receptive, when we have no plan or agenda, when we are just happy 'being' or sometimes when we are in a deep quest for clarity, the horses connect us to the underworld. They help us find our spirit again and help us find our way back onto a path that has meaning and purpose.

Moonlight Dreams

"Moonlight Dreams" 2006
Soft power, peaceful dreamy state, this horse is fully present to herself, her destiny, and the spirit world. She moves with grace and power. The moon represents the way back to daily living, but for now she is content in the mysterious underworld where her dreams shape and shift.

Madonna and Foal

Madonna and Foal, 2004
This painting was inspired by a desire to understand the symbology of the robe and the power it bestows the one wearing it. In this image the goddess is embracing a baby horse. Usually it is the horse who embraces us and our spirit. In this painting the goddess is reciprocating the power to nurture and respects the horse as its own spirit. She embraces the baby horse with unconditional love.

Chief Horse, 2005

Chief Horse, 2005
This painting is the part of a series on chief horses. Chief horses can be male or female. I am particularly interested in the female chief horse. A woman of power who contemplates deeply her role as influencer of social change. In this painting the horse has gone into the underworld to call a circle of other spirit horses. The horses attending this meeting feel a sense of urgency and commitment to healing the human in order to re-connect the human to the natural world in hopes that the human will learn to respect the earth and all of its offspring, both human and animal alike. The horse in this painting is embracing a shield in the form of a ball or circle. The turtle on the shield represents mother earth and the interconnectedness of all things.

Ghost Horses

Ghost Horses, 1998
In this painting I was moved by the spiritual quality of the horse, embraced by a mystical landscape. Horses take our imaginations into the spirit world.

Sky Horses

Sky Horses, Original Oil Painting. 2005.
This painting was inspired by a vision I had of horses running in the clouds. This dream has come to me many times in the last year. They represent how the horse can carry our dreams into the heavens.

Love and Connection

"Love and Connection" 2005
The horse, the hummingbird and the flower are all connected. They respect each other and understand their interconnectedness to spirit, birth, life. They support each other and yet hold each other as unique individuals. This painting was inspired by the news of my daughter's pregnancy and the spirit of the baby in my imagination.

Greener Pastures

"Greener Pastures", 2004
As you can imagine it was a beautiful spring day, the horses running free, enjoying the sun, when I created this piece. This pastel horse is full of color representing that it is truly free and expressing herself with complete abandon. She has no self-doubt, nor does she care what others think of her.

These paintings (below) are part of a series I did on the Native American war pony and the American flag. Many native war ponies lost their indian warriors during battle and within a short or extended period of time they were picked up by the cavalry. These ponies represent the complexity and conflict of individuals torn between two worlds. Each painting in the series represents a native war pony at different stages of their lives. Some are still with their original native warrior; some have lost their warrior but have not yet been picked up by the cavalry (and the flag is either far or near them representing their looming fate), while others have been carrying cavalrymen for many years.

Buffalo Boy

"Buffalo Boy", 2000
This red pony is a young warriors steed. He still lives with his original tribe and has not lost his rider yet. There is no American flag in his scene. He is looking into his future, overlooking his herd. The six marks on his shoulder represent the battles he and his warrior have won to date. And his face is marked and ready for the next battle.

Yellow Horse-The Flag's Embrace

"Yellow Horse-The Flag's Embrace" 2004
The yellow horse in this painting has lost his warrior and feels something coming over him. The flag that represents the cavalry is enveloping him, symbolic of his capture and imminent future with the cavalry in which he will ultimately carry a rider in war against the relatives of his fallen warrior. The hoof tracks on the left of the painting represent four battles he led his Indian warrior in before he lost him in battle.

Looking Back

"Looking Back" 2001
Red Pony lost his rider long ago and has been part of the cavalry for many years. In this painting the American flag is all around him and has even become a part of who he is. The white stripes on his side represent the number of battles he has fought with his cavalryman. The handprint on his shoulder represents the hand of his fallen native warrior who still holds a piece of his heart and memory. He is seen here pausing, looking back into his past as if to remember his fallen warrior, and at the same time he accepts his current life.

Lizard Power

"Lizard Power", Reproduction of a clayboard and pastel. 2004
To me lizards hold a lot of spiritual power. This lizard embraces its power with full color and shares it outward as it plays its part in healing all things.

Barn Owl, Original Silkscreen. 1991.
This silkscreen print is a reproduction of a pen and ink drawing of a barn owl that is part of a series I did on birds of prey in 1991. I was working in my signature style in which I play with lines, triangles, circles to create a form. All of the pieces that make the whole can be found in nature, from the curvasious estuaries, to the stars, to the roundness of a stone, or the spiral of the grass seed.
